Susan Sample was first elected to the City Council of West University Place in 2011. Susan served in that capacity, as well as Mayor Pro Tem until she was elected Mayor in 2015 and 2017. She earned the most votes in the City’s history for her second term as Mayor (receiving 84% of the votes), which ended May 2019. While she was serving as Mayor, West University Place was named the Best Place to Live in the United States by USA Today.
Susan is a product of Houston Independent School District, having attended both River Oaks and Briargrove Elementary, T.H. Rogers Junior High School, and Robert E. Lee High School. She then attended Rice University receiving a Bachelors of Arts in Managerial Studies, followed by a Master’s in Public Accounting from the University of Texas McCombs School of Business. After working in public accounting, she earned her J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law. While working at the Internal Revenue Service Office of Chief Counsel, she completed an LLM in taxation from the University of Houston Law Center.
Starting as a teenager supporting her mother’s efforts as a Republican activist Susan attended her first precinct convention in 1984. Throughout her educational and professional years Susan continued her participation in Republican grass roots activism and attended precinct conventions, district conventions and state conventions as a delegate from the mid 80’s- until 2010 – Susan did take a break From State Conventions after becoming a mom to twins and being elected to public office.
Susan has, and continues to have, an impressive professional life – working as an attorney/CPA for Deloitte in its Office of National Tax Services; and then with the law firm of Norton Rose Fulbright. She is currently a Shareholder with the law firm of Munch Hardt Kopf &Harr. Throughout her career, she has maintained her license as a Certified Public Accountant in the state of Texas.
Susan is a current board member of both the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants as well as the 8,000 member Houston CPA Society. Susan has also served as a Board Secretary of Career and Recovery Resources (is a United Way agency) and currently serves as the Vice President of the SPARK Park Program. Susan is a sustaining member of the Junior League of Houston, and a life member in 10 year committee person with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo - she started with the Rodeo on the membership committee and was named rookie of the year. She later moved to Steer Starlette committee, where she also earned rookie of the year honors.
Susan is also on the Board of Advisors for the Archie Dunham School of Business at Houston Baptist University and is the reunion chair for her Rice University class. Susan and her husband Michael Larsson are the parents of twins born November 2011 and are members of Trinity Episcopal Church in Midtown
